An improvement over the first lens, May 28, 2011 By A reader (U.S.A.) - See all my reviews This review is from: Olympus Micro Zuiko Digital 14-42mm II F3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens for Olympus PEN and Micro Four Thirds Digital Cameras (Silver) (Electronics) This is the second version of the Olympus 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6. I use it with the EPL1.
I have owned the two versions of the lens and the new one is a definitive improvement over the first one: Smaller diameter (but its length has increased very slightly), much lighter (about 40 grams less, which is quite a lot), and the focus is much faster and quieter compared to the first version. I was actually surprised by how much better the focus is compared to the first version. Reviews indicate a gain of about 20% in speed, which does not seem much...until you try.
Image quality is the same, good but not very good. Basically the lens is good for day shoots of a general nature (say you go on a tourist trip). If you are a demanding photographer or have specific needs (sports, etc.) , this is not for you... but in this case the MFT format is not for you either.
I would recommend owners of an epl1 to sell the first version of the kit lens and to get this one, it fits better into the... Read more

Great kit lens, June 24, 2011 By This review is from: Olympus Micro Zuiko Digital 14-42mm II F3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens for Olympus PEN and Micro Four Thirds Digital Cameras (Silver) (Electronics) I've used quite a few lenses in my time, and while I won't say that I'm a pro by any means or that because I've used a lot of lenses my opinion somehow matters more, but I will say that in the scope of comparison based on the size and abilities of this lens, it performs admirably. AF is quite fast, and I find sharpness generally good across the range, though at tele it falls off some. Pretty good wide open, and covering a good focal range, the lens, IMO, is really a little gem of a kit lens. I personally prefer it to the kit 18-55 kit lens I got with my D5000, as it tends to perform at least as well and is... well... half the size. I love being able to carry around my camera (EPL2) and three lenses with extra batteries and filters, all in a case that amounts to nothing larger than a large fanny pack.
Were this lens to be compared across the board to every lens of similar focal length and aperture, for any format, perhaps it would perform poorly. But I find it a joy to use,... Read more
